Galt shooting update: Suspect identified as Joseph Corey, 65 By Maggie Creamer and Jennifer Bonnett/News-Sentinel Staff Writers | Posted: Wednesday, November 28, 2012 1:51 pm GALT -- A suspect who shot and killed an animal control officer today remains barricaded in a home in the 600 block of First Street. However, police said they have had two brief telephone conversations with the suspect. He has been identified as 65-year-old Joseph Corey. Just after noon, the officer and a representative from a bank were trying to make contact with Corey regarding an eviction notice. Before they got to the door, one shot, possibly from a shotgun, was fired through the front door, said Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Jason Ramos. A bullet struck the animal control officer and also grazed the bank representative who suffered superficial wounds. A volunteer with the Galt Police Department who happened to be in the area was flagged down by the bank representative shortly after. Galt officers arrived on scene and moved the animal control officer to a safe location. Paramedics attempted to revive the officer, but he was already deceased. The officer’s name has not been released. He was accompanying the bank representative because there is a dog in the residence, Ramos said. The Sheriff's and Sacramento Police departments responded to assist Galt Police with the incident, and a joint Elk Grove-Galt SWAT team entered a home just after 1:30 p.m. Downtown were closed to traffic, and two nearby residences evacuated. Corey, who owns the residence, is still inside. At one point this afternoon, officers moved the media to a different location when officers believed the suspect might have semi-automatic weapons. At one point, they could hear something in the distance that sounded like gun shots or could have been flash-bang devices used with hopes of rousing Corey. “We are coming up with a plan of action as to what steps to what we’re going to take to get this guy out without injuries to anyone else,” Ramos said earlier in the afternoon. Parents of children at a daycare located within the police perimeter were shuttled by city buses to a different location to be picked up. On Tuesday, the homeowner was served an eviction notice by an armed sheriff’s deputy and the residence’s locks changed. However, he said at the time he had animals he could not care for, according to Ramos. “By law, animals are considered property so it’s incumbent on animal control to safeguard the animals,” Ramos said, adding that that’s why an animal control officer returned today. No one was expected to be inside the house today, he added, and officers are unsure how Corey got inside. The animal control officer worked for the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department as Galt contracts with the Sheriff’s Department for animal control services. Reports that Galt High School was on lockdown could not be confirmed. However, students were released at regular time, but reportedly told to stay away from the area. 1) http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/49984095/ns/today-good_news/
